Since writing my car off last week need some new wheels pretty sharpish (no courtesy car is doing my head in

)

Was a bit stuck for choice and almost put my name down on another Corsa this afternoon but thinking a diesel golf would do me better.

To be fair, I don't do that many miles to warrant a diesel (average 12000 a year) but want one anyway

Got about 10k to spend which would get me an 05 2.0 TDi in decent spec according to autotrader and is something I could easily hold on to for a few years without problems.

I'll go round a few local dealerships tomorrow, but anything to be wary of? Common problems?

If you don't mind it having a boot get a jetta for cheaper.

TBH don't really need the boot and its a bit big for what I'd need. Nice idea though.

most common problems we get at work are oil pumps,check for signs of coolant in oil.fuel pumps,check for poor starting.radio dispalys playing up,just simple update but if update does not work needs new radio and at 593pound aint cheap.flywheels disintegrating you will know if flywheel is on way out when roadtest one as soon as car hits load in any gear makes very loud metalic sound.and last door seals ahanging off most of these have bin repalced with better parts but just check when open all doors aint flapping about lol.

I couldnt justify the premium for a car thats essentially a polo with leather.

You can pick up a decent VRS for 6k now tbh

I had a mk5 2.0 GT for a couple of weeks and would actually consider buying one.

Much much better to drive than the mk4 imo and looked great as standard.

Doesn't the highest priced to lowest price go Polo > Ibiza > Fabia though?!

I was looking at TDi Polo's on eBay etc and they're massively expensive for a GT TDi etc.

Well, just put a deposit down on a Mk5 1.9. Drives really nicely, looks smart and has a few extras like cruise, smart wipers & lights. 06 plate, £9500.

Be two weeks until I can collect it but need the insurance to pay out ASAP.

Never had an oil pump fail on one..
Its only Passats that the fuel pumps seem to fail on, hence the recall..

Rest of it.. yep

and to add to the list of common problems..

Turbos blow up with worrying frequency
Gearboxes tend to fail on earlier tdi's
Aircon compressors like to fail big time.. contaminate the whole a/c system with swarf

last 3months ive done 4 oil pumps and lost count of number abs control units done lol.seem to of sorted most of the problems though.

Insurance have offered £6500 for my Corsa which I snapped up. Was their first and only offer and from my reasearch is more than market value so I'm pretty happy.

Golf seemed perfect on the test drive. Quiet with no funny noises. Pulled well in all gears and all the doors shut nicely with no loose bits and pieces. Seems sound

Must say, well impressed with Norwich Union. Sorted it all out when they said they wouldn't and not trying to reclaim masses of cash from me either. Extra insurance for the golf is only £50 for the remaining 8 months of my policy this year despite being 4 (I think) groups higher.
