Is there any way I can improve the cooling/air flow of it?

It's on a (wooden) desk most of the day or on my lap.

My laptop is a HP G6000 something-or-other...

You can buy laptop stands which elevate the laptop from the desk and put it at a slight angle.

You can also buy ones which plug in to the wall and has fans which blow air onto the base of the laptop to try and keep it cool

Thanks Aaron.

I downloaded this CPU temperature monitoring program called Core Temp, and it's saying that Core #0 is running at 56 deg C. and Core #1 is running at 61 deg C.

Is this normal?!

Won't opening up my laptop void the warranty?

It depends how old it is, but some of the covers can be removed without a problem, such as the RAM cover on my Dell laptop.

Where did you buy it from then? I'd be tempted to take it back tbh.

Mine is 3 years old now, and only gets hot when doing mega-processing like 3D CAD, but I have a notebook cooler I use to help it and it does very well.

Only problem is the cooler is quite noisy

Got it from Staples.

Thing is I use it for my work not for playing games or anything, and the only programs I normally have running simultaneously I don't think are extremely resource sapping.

I think the only program I use which would probably go near that category is Photoshop.

I'd probably just pop into them then, and say you don't think the fan is working correctly as its getting hot and on almost constantly, very loud.

If you are using it on a solid surface like that, it should be able to get plenty of air under it and the fan should only be coming on intermittently IMO.

Well I have just removed the battery, and the cover to the RAM and HDD, and hoovered dust off there and off the area where the fan is - however the fan has a mesh so I couldn't hoover up any dust in that area (thanks to Abdus for the hoovering idea)

Laptop is now running off the battery, and reports 33/44 deg. celsius, so I will compare with being plugged in to AC to see if that makes any difference?

Tom - Staples staff where I bought this laptop from are thick as shit, I don't think they will be very helpful to me if I took the laptop back to them... I'm assuming I could contact HP directly?
