on behalf of a mate:
ive been saving for a bit and my performance is getting a bit boring, now the handling and braking are as sorted as they can be without spending thousands i need more power!
my dilema is i need a turbo that dead driveable still yet can deliver around 400bhp.
now it has a 2.3 to spin it up so that helps but my current turbo spools at 2000rpm and going to something huge that doesnt get going till around 3500rpm will be frustrating to drive. so what turbos re out there that you have tried or have? i could go gt3071r but thats in the very late spool range and good for ober 450bhp, and the gt28rs will only pump out 370bhp and cost the same money and doesnt spool all that much earlier.
ok i know im asking for alot here but surely theres a turbo out there that fits the bill?
btw needs to be t25 flange.

Thats the thing though..........its difficult to get the best of both worlds. Flow for bigger power and they get laggy or get a nice small one that spools quick that cant make the power?
Id suggest a bigger turbo and then change the ECU for one you can map to advance the iginition massively until it comes on boost to try and compensate for the lag. Still not ideal but its as good as your gonne get!!!
I dont even feel the turbos come in on mine!

ps... positive boost at 3500rpm isnt that laggy in the grand scale of things, and as Stu mentioned abit of adjustment of timing and cam work can help spool the turbo earlier etc
What ever he does, make sure its a modern turbo, and not over specced! Try and use the flow charts to see if its going to be efficient at the boost he wants to run!
Will he have enough fuel to power it etc etc etc

AK owned this thread, closely followed by Stu.
We can distinctivly see the more mature members, from those that are still growing bumfluff (although Stu may qualify for this also )
That chart is really good, simple yet informative.

Must be a 2.3lpt, the HOT ones have a GT04.
Saabscene.co.uk and uksaabs.eu have loads of info, as well as the american saabcentral.com
If he goes to forum.ecuproject.com he'll find out all about remapping both the older trionic 5 and newer trionic 7 engines
(i've just finished soldering headers onto my ecu to map it today )

Wait a min actually, the only 2.3 turbo in the 9-3 was the viggen which should be the TD04, is it a new shape 9-3?
