Yeah you could use vinyl, obviously spraying would be better but vinyl is prett strong stuff, I was a sign writer for 2 years, did a lot of motorsport related stuff.

Rim tape:

Just a vinly applied in quarters, driving hard won't make a difference AK, good quality vinyl should stay on, mine lasted through jet washes!

You can get rim tape on an 'applicator roll' which just flexes to the rim and IMHO looks a little gash unless you are VERY careful.. Or you can get it in curved sections.
