GHD's are awesome i love mine, unfortunately i dropped them at the weekend and the heat plate dropped out!!
I wouldn't think twice about buying another pair tho if i can't get mine fixed,
Sounds like a really good gift idea although i would recommend not getting them off ebay as i have been told there are alot of fakes flying around at the mo.
Either get them straight from GHD or a hairdressers that way you know you have bought the real thing and have something to fall back on should the worst happen
