Ok few things for you here - from an 8v GTi owner

Its not slow, but its not quick either. Is very torquey low down, great round town - i have seen 46mpg on a run (driving carefully)
I do really look after it. Its not the quickest car i have owned and its totally bog standard. I love it to pieces, no intention of selling the car.

Late mk3's have galvanised bodies (P & R plates, less likely to rust)

the 16v makes good decent power (i have seen standard abf's with over 100k making 170+ bhp)but the mpg isn't as good as the 8v.

I have also seen 8v with serious mileage, they will go forever if looked after.

VR6, great noise crap mpg round town, not bad on a run.

1.8t into a Mk3, if you buy an 8v, its easy IF YOU USE A STANDARD VW TURBO, goes in on existing mounts.
if your car starts life as an 8v, you will need to convert the car to hydraulic clutch.

There is other stuff, but frankly im bored of typing.

Drop me a pm if you need anything else.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder to be honest. Some people HATE them with a passion.

Not me, i love em. The perfect compromise between being able to fix it yourself, and modern technology.

The engines are far from refined, but the engines can make good power, well built and will literally go forever if looked after.

I just phoned up about a N reg GTI 16V with 53k on the clock advertised for £1k. Was sold ages ago though!

Personally I'd say condition is more an issue on these rather than mileage.

My Vento is on 145k and is still mechanically fine. UNfortunatley its spent its life by the sea though and the arches and sills are corroding.

I find Pistonheads overpriced.

I'd go with ebay or Autotrader personally.

I'm quite interested in these myself atm.

Are they really that good for mpg round town?

What I don't like about my 1.6 Corsa is it's crap on B-roads, doesn't soak up the bumps well at all and doesn't feel planted...

How do these GTI 8v's fair? What about if you lower them a bit too?

Cheers

Dave - the GTi was born for the B road, people call the mk3 chassis "sloppy" but i find mine great fun.

I always use "good rubber" no jokes please. The shocks are stock but in good nick, ride quality is good and it handles well.

with the 8v its "suggested" for optimum handling performance to NOT lower any more than 30mm (which is not in accordance with the scene) but hey, i prefer spirited driving rather than having it as low as a nats arse (due to where i live in the sticks)

The Golf does feel planted, solid and able to handle corners well.

Like i say its far from the quickest on the planet, but it is good fun - which is the thing.

Round town i can see 30ish mpg which is not to bad really!

Mine is lowered 30mm on eibachs and handles just as well as my corsa did, feels alot more predictable aswell. Check for rust on the sills and around the bottom, and ends of the arches
