don't think you can turn it off but why not goo for a gsi you have to make the step of goin bigger then a 1.4 oneday as long as you can handle the gsi(not drive like a nob)and treat it proply then you should be fine maybe its just your mate don't want you to have a quicker car then him lol

MK3 astra gsi C20XE has traction control fitted, others dont.
MK4 GSI dosnt have it as switch from factory, but a switch can be wired up.

thats strange my mk4 astra gsi has the button for traction/esp down by the gear stick and so has all the other gsi's ive looked in at shows etc
if i was you mate i would go for the mk 4 gsi as they are quick but they are bit more relaxed driving style, the power delivery is smooth and nice for cruising, turn the t/c off and it does become bit of an animal.
you will also find you will drive more sensible cos of the mpg which can get low when blasting it.........
i dont think mk4 gsi is that much quicker than 2.0 corsa/saxo vts to 80 odd mph so whats the problem just go for it
in fact my 2.0 corsa pulls ahead from standstill quite easily as i own both

they are cruisers not performance cars IMO. I enjoyed mine, very refined for a hot hatch and engine is great as mentioned very smooth.
Just dont expect any frills!

The 230bhp GSI cudnt keep up with the 115bhp Cavvy??
If it was that way then the owner of the GSI cant drive.

I went from a 1.4 corsa C to a 2.0 Turbo Astra VXR... it was fine
As long as you don't drive like a cock, (especially when you've first got the car!) you'll be fine...
