I've never really liked personal software firewalls, I find they hog resources and annoy the pish out of me.

If you have a router (like myself) which has a software firewall built in, then your personal firewall is really only good for software dialling out, which I usually deal with myself when I install the software and the rest doesnt bother me.

Each to their own really, I find programs like that embed themselves too much into the OS and I hate that.

Avast is what i'm running, it'ss free and reviews seem to suggest it's better than AVG.
I find it a little quicker than AVG and it seems to use a lot less resources.

Fair enough.

Everything you said was far to geeky for me I just installed it as my mums mate (big on PCs) said it was a good anti virus.

Zonealarm is a Firewall, personally i wouldn't bother using a third party one, just stick to windows in-built one. And like Bart said if you have a router then they come equipped with hardware versions as well.

As for anti-virus, like said AVG and Avast are about the two popular ones - try them both out and see which you prefer

yea completly uninstall norton, then install AVG.

It's also worth downloading CCleaner, as it removes a lot of crud from your system (temp files, registery cleaner etc) - if i uninstall something then i run the reg cleaner.

i used avg, but changed to avast and is better in my opinion. its free on the net for 12 months, after that just re-install it again
my dad has avg on his computer and my mum has avg on her laptop.
so its down to what you prefer, if you download alot of songs and that then i would go for avast

yeah it seems to be pretty good. Before i use to use MaceCraft RegCleaner (powertools i think its called) - seemed to work pretty well but everyone says this is better. Although i find the old JV16 RegCleaner, the newer MaceCraft and CCleaner all pick up different stuff in the reg, so i use a mixture of all three. But a lot people say, cleaning the registry does absolutely nothing in performance, but i just use them to get rid of traces of uninstalled priograms.

Also Spyware Blaster and SpyBot are a must

make sure you completely uninstall norton, and then go to add/remove again and uninstall anything related to 'symantec' and 'liveupdated'.

It wont completely uninstall itself

Im going to try avast I think.
