Where is the cheapest place to get Vista Ultimate 32bit from? Either OEM or upgrade, i'm not fussy. I've got £105.74 on eBuyer. Anyone know of anywhere else?

Technically, he is right as you aren't supposed to be able to buy it on its own. Unfortunately, eBuyer/Scan/Amazon etc. don't usually care.

It says that it can only be installed on one system and is locked to the motherboard, but how often do you change the motherboard?

most suppliers will sell OEM software without any hardware.

however, the cheapest place is www.torrentz.com

Also, why do you want ultimate? the main benefits are networking (for active directory and such) and animated wallpaper which does nothing except annoy you and hog resources

I thought that it was much better than home and was probably worth the £40 more than home? I have XP Professional at the moment.

Also, I have the Intel E6750 processor and 4gb RAM. Is it worth going for the 64bit or not? What do I need to worry about if I do look at the 64 bit version?

Don't get home basic under any circumstances.

I've got ultimate on my machine but got home premium on the laptops and i've never ran into any issues.

I've got the 64bit one going here and I don't have any problems with it.

Ultimate comes with both 32 bit and 64 bit dvd's so if you get that you can give both a go.

Yeah, i've heard "avoid Home Basic at all costs."

I'm more worried about various bits of software not working on the 64bit, but as far as I can see, all of my hardware is supported by 64bit drivers.

You sound like you have a recent machine so you shouldn't have any issues with it really.

It was custom built in September or October last year from what I remember. E6750, 4gb DDR2, X-Fi gamer, EVGA GTS8800 320mb superclocked thingy.

As I said, i'm more worried about software not working properly. Mainly BF2

Personally wouldnt go for 64bit, as I cant help thinking its not quite mainstream yet.

Hardwar vendors are still treating it as a second priority for releasing drivers and such.

I did check and all of my hardware appears to be supported for the moment. Most of my software will still work, so its only the stuff that I rarely use that I might have problems with.

indeed, each to their own.
What software will you be using (actual 64bit software not 32bit)?
3d modelling and CAD etc?

If you wont be using 64bit applicationsI would really advise against the possible hassle.

Running a 64-bit OS also have the advantage of being able to address 4GB of ram (or more) properly so if you are running any memory intensive programs then it can be a real advantage.

At the moment, not much in the way of dedicated 64 bit stuff and i'd guess probably not much in the next few months either. Besides, it saves me having to upgrade it again in the future, before the next version of Windows comes out.

There's no hassle with Vista x64 any more, a year or more ago there was, but now there are drivers for anything you would use. Even my old printer has a driver, despite HP saying that they were not going to bother releasing a driver for it. The only piece of hardware that won't play is a Hauppauge WinTV card I have, which I replaced with a Pinnacle - job done
