But coasting still usues fuel, as the engine has to be kept ticking over.
If you leave it in gear, the fuel will be cut off, because the momentum of the car keeps the engine turining over.

Putting it in neutral and coasting uses more fuel than any other method.

i sometimes missjudge RPM's and lock wheels up at about 8500rpm going down gears

thats what monster was getting at, he was asking me why I coasted instead of using that method,
just habit, Ive used your method alot today

nothing like driving in "economy mode" every now and then is there!
Its a good feeling to know that your virtually travelling for free, even though it may only be for a few feet

its soooo hard though, I over concentrate and realise im doing 25 in 6th and actually doing 20mpg and holding everyone up

use every gear
use the gearbox as my brake too, dont like wearing my brake pads out

I was taught to block change from say 5th to 2nd, but much prefer to change down through the gears using engine braking.
Most of the time if you time changes right you don't even need to brake - coming to a roundabout for example you can drop a couple of gears on the approach, watch to the right and already be in exactly the right gear just to put your foot down and carry on if nothings coming

I used to do that, but with the deisel now it will pull normally from 10mph in 3rd so I just wack it into 3rd comming upto junctions or roundabouts

one of my mates has a sprinter van, he is tall so he can steer the wheel with his knees, he was driving with a kfc burger in one hand the other day and his drink in the other steering with his knees on the motorway. when i questioned him he said he done it every morning on the way to work with his maccy d's
