You need a MOT to tax it first though.
What i did was insure it, drive to MOT place, get that done then go get my tax.
ive done that quite a few times now as my cars always run out of tax and mot when they are off the road!

I wasn't 100% sure, always good to find out the correct info for future reference.

In addition to what I said, you can drive it there but not back if it fails. You may only drive home if it passes.
Plus you must have pre-booked the appointment and driven straight there.

No Ian, you can drive a car to or from a pre-booked MOT without tax (but MUST have insurance) or pre-booked works so the car can pass an MOT.
TBH, I'd just make the Post Office on my return route from the MOT station if it passes.

I've gotta tax mine too, £120 out of my holiday money
See if you can get a day's insurance or something if you don't want to take out a full policy, get it MOT'd then get tax on the way back. That's what I'd do.

you cant drive it straight away if you tax it online as it is an offence to NOT have a valid tax disk displayed
also, you are not allowed to use day insurance to tax a car
But, you can always take a years insurance out with HIC, print the cover not off, tax the car, then cancell the policy within 14 days for a full refund
