How do you guys do it ?
At the moment i'm earning a hefty amount, and would like to put away half each month, however i find the first week after getting paid, including bills, i spend about £500. I then worry for 2 weeks, dont buy anything or go anywhere really, and then the last week realise i have money left and go out to dinner, pub, cinema etc and end up with about £100 left over at the end of the month.
Also, the temptation of...need a new computer, camera, stereo, something for the car etc etc etc always bites me if i have a decent wedge mid month.
How do you stop yourself spending overboard ?

I do exactly that, pay all my bills etc first week and spend quite a bit in first week, then panic and save for the month, then realise i have £200 odd left and then go out for dinner, or buy something and then end up with £50 left or something :/

Russ, Will power is to a point the answer, but if im having a crap day i might jump on play.com and buy 3 dvds for £15, think thats nothing, then grab some shoes or something, dinner, cinema, petrol and parking...that one day i have spent £150...
Just opened an e-savings account with natwest, so will transfer as much as possible to that each month, put in £150 a month dd to that and you get £50 free if you do that for 12 months, monthly interest so should be able to save some there. And maybe look at how much i have spent a month, and budget £150 a week, and move everything else out after bills have been paid

just write on a piece of paper "do you really want this?" and put it next to your bank card in your wallet. makes you think about each purchase.
i managed to save money by writing the name of the car i wanted on a piece of paper and put it in my wallet. worked quite well.

Sounds like an idea, need to decide how much i want to budget myself each week for, and then equally budget how much i want to save

For month to month stuff use a spreadsheet, that what I do.
Total income at the top, regular bills in the middle, total left at the bottom.
I divide whats left by the number of days in the month and compare that to what I have spent.
I.e 10 days into the month I know what 10/31st of my money is and if
I am under I can spend more...if I am overspend i cut back
p.s. thats the simle version my spreadsheet is more complex cause I am very anal about stuff like this

As blebo, set a fixed budget. Either write down what you have spent, or do some sort of reminder to yourself that you can only spend xxx per month.
I find it easy to save, currently putting away a good £500 per month as a deposit towards a house.
