It doesnt go shitty. If its not used often enough, the rubber seals on the air con pipes dry up and perish, causing it to leak, should use it at least once a week. And get it re-gassed every 3 years.

Its extremely muggy/humid in England, a car is a confined space with lots of heat absorbing plastics/leather etc Air con is IDEAL in a climate such as this. 
 
Aircon removes moisture from the air, thus making it less warm, nicer to breathe in and will remove any un-wanted moisture from windscreens etc
