I always have to laugh when I'm heading towards Leeds way on the M62 and it splits in two with a house in the middle

You can just picture it

Home owner: No, you're not having my house, if you want your stupid road you're gonna have to build it round me
People responsible for the road: Ok

A few days later the place is swamped with diggers and everything and the home owner's looking out the window thinking what have I done

The house in the middle of the 62 was just co-incidence, the road had to split anyway due to the land.

i'm pretty sure you get a settlement if public highways or train lines ruin something or other.

my mates parents got a few grand payout because a train line was built quite close to their house. not sure if it was to do with the fact his sister was spaz, never bothered asking

Story #2: “Island Farm in Middle of England’s M62 Highway”

In the 1960s, when Highway M62 was being built in northern England to connect the cities of Liverpool and Hull (and others in between), the developers came across a stubborn sheepfarmer who refused to sell his property. So, they built the highway around his farm, isolating him, his sheep, and farm. (No sheep jokes, OK?)

What We Found: Yes, the highway does split around this farm, but the sheepfarmer’s stubborness is urban legend. Since this highway goes through the Pennines mountain range, the engineers found it was difficult to build the east and west roads together due to geological and economical issues. So, it was split apart, with the farm sitting in the middle.

I remember something from Japan a year or so back where they had to do deep excavations where some houses were.
one of the owners refused to leave so they excavated all around the house and left it sky high on a pedestal with the surrounding land 40ft or so below

will try and find a picture
