Open your bonnet, its an easy distinction between 8 and 16 valves.

Most likely 8v.
However, according to Parkers, they did make a 16v LS.

i think the newer ones did. How old is the car? pre 97? if so im pretty sure it will be 8v

Does it look a bit like this? If so it's a 1.2 16v, or you may have been ripped off and it's actually a 1.0 12v.
