http://gb.cannondale.com/bikes/08/ce/model-8BR1.html Want, very much.
I need to start commuting to work (<10 miles each day) to get fit and save money in the long run. I fancy that bike as I've grown up with singlespeeds and simplicity.
Thoughts/suggestions?

Yerp, it all depends on the scheme.
There is a sefton scheme (for people who work for a sefton company) where you get 60% of the price of the bike
Or theres other ones where youre company buys the bike for you, and you buy it back off them after a year for £10
Etc etc

I LOVE the idea of having an Urban mountain bike Road tires, singlespeed, rigid frame and forks, just like a 'grown up' BMX

Well tbh, it all depends how much you have got to spend!
Theres the specialized langster - which is a propper road bike, just single speed £400
Marin Hamilton - £350
Trek soho s - £350
Trek soho 4.0 - £700
To name a few

Cool cool
I will say, the 24/7 bikes arent realy for comuting, more dirt jumping etc
The gearing will tire you out badly!

Good idea.
And that bike is very similar to the one Hammond used on Top Gear for the across London race.
Look at Specialized bikes - you might find they're more value for money/cheaper for a similar model etc
