Someone here with a 1995 calibra c20xe. It has a black HT lead cover, not a red one. He says "thats because its a late redtop engine, so they used black tops"
....

No. Late XEs generally came with a black sparkplug cover, and some of them even said "ecotec" on them. so not bullshit at all.

Yip, L-shaped ones are all 'redtops' regardless of the colour of the plug cover.

The late late late ones had black covers just before they went to the fully fledged Ecotec lump.
I think they were a little underpowered also.

Wrong; they had 6bhp less purely because of the CAT; take it off and it theory it would have been 156 same as the early ones.
The late ones also made peak torque lower down the rev-range.

I ran an early XE and then swapped it for a late dispac XE in my Corsa, late engines better to drive, better on fuel and a nicer engine in general

Yes I realise they drop 6bhp for the Cat.
I got confused....it would appear they just made the 'blacktop' XEs idle lower to try and comply with the new emission laws.
Then the invetible happened and the Ecotec came along

To make things worse, this car seems to have 'T' rated tyres on it
