Don't take the money, don't speak to them but if you are curious then let your mum know about the letter and see why she hates them so much. I wouldn't go behind your mums back at all.

I've been in a similar position for years. My Mum fell out with her Dad because he was a complete prick and he still sends a cheque every Christmas and Birthday. I disagree with the way he treated my Mum so I send it back. Think about it like this, Is it worth upsetting your Mum and possibly doing irrepairable damage to your relationship for a few hundred quid or whatever?

Main conern, why would they mention money to you before the meet up? There's no need to mention it if they genuinely want to see you again.
