I am very interested in getting a job in the forensic computing department of a police force.
Does anyone know for certain how you would apply for such a position? I have just done a computing degree so I would be looking for a graduate level position.
Would it involve becoming a regular police man and 'walking the beat' for a few years?

I imagine you would either have to join and move up the ranks and move deparments, or If you have a degree in it or experiance try your areas police website, I know strathclyde police have a job section on their sitel.

You need to wait until there is a job advertised for it. Keep checking the local forces website for Police Staff jobs. You won't have to be a regular to apply/obtain the job either, but be weary of the fact that a lot of the staff jobs are "jobs for the boys" i.e. they've already got someone for the job, but they're advertising it because they have to.

Dont know if it would be a similar principle but i was told before i can specialise i would have to do 2 years normal beat police.
Might be different for applying for a job like that.

When they say that, they mean specialise as a Traffic Officer, Dog Handler, Firearms etc. Forensics, Scenes of Crime etc. are usually Police Staff jobs, rather than regular Police jobs, meaning that you can apply for most of them off civvy street.

I have checked every areas police site that I would be willing to move too and I cannot find anything. Is there such a thing as a main police office that runs all the others? Might be worth talking to them if it exists and has a HR department

Nope. You'll just have to keep on checking. We did have one advertised a few months ago in our local force.

Cheers Dan. I assume you work for the Police?
Am I living in a dream world to assume that I could get employeed by the police into the forensic computing department and get full training from them? Or do they require previous knowledge?

Each force recruits its own staff. Lots of staff posts are filled by retires officers, but they still have to apply like everyone else. Most of the forensics, if not all, is staff not officers, so its not necessary to join as a PC. Any queries u2u me, will see if i can help. Currently PC in training, was police staff beforehand.

I work as Police Staff, but i'm trying to get in as a regular .
They'll usually give some training if necessary, but they'll expect you to have an understanding in certain areas. Unfortunately, it differs from job to job. Edit to add: I had no real professional experience with the job that i'm doing now and have been trained by Police staff, so it is possible

Not sure if it helps, but alot of the forensic teams ive worked with before have been civilians/contractors.
A fair few start as students and use a sandwich year to get into a particular section, then get offered a job from there.
Could be worth contacting your uni to see if any positions in such areas are made available to them? i know my place brings in students from Loughborough (is that spelt right?) and Brunel uni, but also accepts from other uni's depending on what course your doing/did, i.e. photography, xray, chemistry, physics etc....

Departments in the Scottish forces have moved to an agency called SPSA. Don't know if the English have an equivalent though?
