The car with the problems here is an astra G, posting on behalf of a friend.

Problem started when i had a new flexi joint welded in my exhaust.
The guy from the garage that did the work, didnt disconnect the battery...

Since then, it had a bad misfire, I changed the plugs and the coil pack because the plugs were burnt out, changed them they were shit hot, now the problems returned, but its not a misfire its more a lack of power, but i have changed the plugs yet again since because they were burnt out.

Could it be the welding has caused some damage somehwere?

Any advice or knowledge please help. Thanks

sounds like a typical problem caused by earthing a welder through the chassis and not using a battery isolator or disconnecting the ecu.

If this the case whats usally damaged?

It cant be the ECU? Can it?

looking that way mate, looks like its spiked the ecu pritty bad. Always disconect the ecu and bat if posebel(sp) when doing welding

sounds EXACTLY like an ecu damaged by welding. why didnt the garage doing it disconnect the battery or the ecu?

Garages doing welding never disconnect the battery or ecu.
Ive never seen one do it anyway

By disconnecting the battery is useless i was reading few weeks ago as still ecu is earthed to chassis a special device must be connected to the battery

You sure its not just a missfire caused by something else and its not just coincidence that it has gone fucked just after the work?

They always clamp something onto my battery when it's being welded.

thats weird, every car i've seen welded has the battery disconnected.

This might explain some of my engine running issues... which coming to think of it started aroudn the same time i began the major chassis repairs

I tried to search for this battery clamp everywhere but could not find one ,could be very handy when welding I don't think it cost to much

Yep.
I always disconnect them when doing welding myself, but garages like cutting corners.

Whenever you weld on a car you should disconnect either the battery or ECU. if you dont disconnect the ecu you must use a battery isolator to protect the ecu as it is still connected to the chassis earth system.

My Isolator cost me about 25 quid and gets used most days in the workshop.

btw it is not the ecu only the problem but there is the alternator diodes that are damaged by welding
