mmm i wanted a 320i coupe but though insurance is for me about an extra £200 a year for a 325i not much more really so i would go for the 325i because 320i 150bhp and 1400kg = not very fast. 325i and inlarged throttle body you have about 200bhp still 1400kg so about 7 secs to 60 and doesn't use that much more fuel i would say average about 28mpg for both cars

I currently own:
E36 320i
E36 323i
The 320i is the better bet for cheapness, the 2.0 6 cylinder engine is very efficient and runs like a beast, im actually considering selling mine for 1k(high mileage but good service history and condition).
The 320 has a similar mpg to the 318is because you can sit in higher gears with low revs. The 6 cylinder engines are bullet proof from bmw so its a good work horse.
as for my 323i, well its fully kitted out with extras. Leather, air con, loads of little m3 extras on it.
It uses quite abit of petrol round town(so i just use it for out of town journeys or sunday best ).
I can get a good 40mpg on a motorway, 25 round town.
Oh and the 323 is quite fast, i used to own a 106 gti. Going from that i thought it lacked the raw grunt but you will find it pulls and keeps on pulling through the revs. Whereas the 106 used to pull till it hit about 60 and then drop.

the 323 is the same engine, so you could just do what i did and put a throttle from a 325 on.

the 318 E46 is slow. dont let anyone tell u it aint. BUT the running costs are not as steep as everyone makes out.... if you take it to a dealership then yes it will be but any specialised place is just as cheap as my old vauxhall. its reliable, takes a battering and i get a very good MPG out mine (35+ in most cases)

Nice to know.
Is there any difference in the e36 and e46 engines?

the only thing i know about the E46 is that 2001 and below the 318 was an 8 valve and 2001+ the 318 was a 16v, the 8v is something like 115bhp and the 16v around 150bhp IIRC.

320 is better for mpg, the 320 actually sounds sportier but the 323 is loads faster and drinks more.

had to do a water pump and disks and pads on my mates 328, thought the parts would be dear but where cheep as fuck from Europarts. Cant see them being expensive to run really if you can afford the fuel and insurance
