My mate keeps asking me why people seem to like putting C20XE/LET's into cars, instead of the Z engines. I tell him they probably tune better but I need a real answer now
So, why are C20's so popular? Give a newbie a hand

The C's are older, cheaper, easier to fit.

Cheaper and easier to get hold of then?
One reason that he keeps asking is because of the Coupé in TV this month, with the C LET. He has a Coupé too and says "why don't they put the Z one in which normally goes in it" or along those lines.
Ahh, cheers John. Didn't think about it being easier to fit.

C conversion is generally easier but I would favour a Z if the car was newer.

More compatible with corsa than a Z series engine.... a Z lump can be dropped in though

Is it an astra coupe in tv?
I'm all for conversions to engines you can't buy in the car but i've never understood converting it to one you could just go and buy, especially an older version of one you can just go and buy.

I've been told by some other chap with an Astra that Z's are basically the same engine apart from the bottom end.
quote: Not alot has changed on the bottom end since the C20LET either, pretty much the same bottom end with a different head. Crank, conrods and pistons etc would fit all in the Z20 if removed from a C20.

Same here mate, they bought a 1.8 and modded it then put the C LET in.
Yeah, it's on the front cover and it's gold, you can't miss it To start with I found it hard telling the difference between Coupé's and 3 door Hatches from a quick glance, but since my mate bought one it's gotten easier One easy way to tell is the roof line is a smooth curve, but on the hatches it has a slight corner in it above the rear window.

The Coupé? That's interesting. I'll try a finished items search, so long as it wasn't more than 90 days ago it should be there.
Can't find any 1.8 Coupé's, just a 2.0 and a couple of 2.2's.

Cheaper to tune the C'LETs as theres more parts available.
And like for like the C engine is a better all rounder.

The gist of it is that the C/Let is a much cheaper engine and tuning parts are easier to come by and again are also slightly cheaper.
Also although i've never done it i think the Corsa B c20let conversion is far easier to than the Zlet conversion due to the newer wiring and such like.

This was my thinking behind a lack of Z series engines in 1990 - 2000 cars.

I disagree there! after building a big spec bare block C LET it cost me thousands!
There is probably more parts avaliable for Z LET engines now, look at all the off the shelf manifold/turbo set ups avaliable from tuners.
This was never the case with C LET stuff, it always had to be custom made
It will be even bigger as the Astra H is now in America, so will be an even bigger market for parts at some stage!

Well nowadays u can get copies of EDS/Vmax Evo software for the Clet for very little £££.That isnt the case with the Zlet.
Also parts for the CLET can be used from other cars i.e saab injectors, frontera coolers etc.Id say it was far easier and cheaper to take a CLET to 300bhp than it is taking a ZLET to 300bhp.Around £300 will take a CLET to a reliable 280bhp.

That it'll get to 300bhp.
There is a Corsa Sport in TV with a 300bhp C LET. Not sure on the exact number but it's about 300, more than 280 either way.
Cheers for all the replies
