I can comment on this personally.

Last car I had was a 106 1.5 D Escapade with 56k on clock when I bought it for £400. Stupidly cheap to run and never let me down. No turbo so can be a little sluggish to get going but once it is going its a quick little thing for what it is!

Now I have VW Vento 1.9 TDi (golf mk3 with a boot but cheaper as not so popular) Got her for £300 with 1 owner from new, 126k on clock altough a bit rusty in places. Never mises a beat and running it on Used veg oil.

306 TD, quite good cars for the money. Watch out for dodgy electrics etc. I can get about 90 miles to £10, which isn't to bad I don't think.

Also cheap to insure, I'm just 19 and have just passed my test, and i'm paying just over £1000.

Buy a cheap low miler AX. Mine was a 1.0 4 Speed and went forever on petrol

You definatley won't spend any money on it, and will be far too embarassed to drive it further than you need to.

Saved me a bomb when I had mine. Only cost £350 too

306 d-turbo will see you well, can get a phase 1 306 for much cheapness, and should return 50+MPG.
