i accidentally formatted my ipod last year, 4500 songs gone just like that! and i hadnt backed the files up either.
it was so depressing going up into the loft to get all the cd's down again, first thing i did was get a extrenal hard drive and backed them up this time

That sorta compares to winning the lottery and finding out youve lost the ticket

I found it easier to just download it all again rather than mess about with the CDs

Itunes is a horrible shitty interface. I would use another third party ap. Then again I take it you want them ready to go on an Ipod?.

Seriously?!
Its possibly the easiest app to use in the world, which is how Apple do things tbh.

No it's turned into a giant advertising media. I don't want it pissing about looking for album art or track names. I don't even like ID3 tags I prefer them off. I know this can all be turned off but that is the point there is far too many options. I prefer a simpler application that's all.

It's two options to stop it finding stuff. And there's not a single advert in it unless you go on to the iTunes store, and then it's just advertising what's on there.
iTunes is clean and simple, and it's the best at organising music IMO.

What exactly is the problem with it downloading artwork and the songs having ID3 tags?
Are you sure that you aren't just against iTunes because its an Apple product?

+1 - you'd be amazed how many people think like this. My mate at work prefers to drag and drop files into Winamp cause he thinks iTunes is gash.
