The cost of petrol will hit £1.50 a litre next year, forcing many motorists off the road altogether, it has been claimed.

Costs to soar next year? With prices currently at an average of 109.8p a litre drivers are forking out more than £61 each on average to fill up their tanks, according to uSwitch.com.

The comparison website says this is a 25%, or £12.27, increase since 2007 when a full tank cost £49.22 (87.9p per litre).

However, new analysis by uSwitch reveals that things could be about to get far worse, with the cost predicted to go up by another 37%.

It says motorists could then expect to pay £84 each time they need to fill up - £2,637 a year.

That's good stuff.

Work is only about a mile and a half away for me at the mo, so on sunny days I can cycle, but when it's pouring, the car has to come of course

I paid £35 last week (28th) for 31 litres. Not as much as a lot of people on here, but then again I only have a 12v That was when it was 112.9, I'm pretty sure it's something like 115 or 116 now, that means 4p increase in one week

My bike used to be about a tenner to fill up, that'll probably cost a good quid or so more now as well, but then that will last about 200 miles. Good ol' 125's with 85-90 mpg

Numberwang!

These constant increases are getting worse and I really feel its unfair on the motorist...not only are we faced with road tax (again, big increases on the horizon) but huge amounts of duty/tax on fuel where does it all go

Cant the government take the tax off cars/petrol and put it on white lightning/carling to stop chavs getting pished every night and clogging up A+E beds

That is the biggest problem imho.

Granted, we aren't going to see any benefit in terms of investment in 'green' but if the road conditions were perfect, on par with the most of Europe, then I think motorists wouldn't mind so much paying these taxes.

The fact that we are paying more and more but the roads are getting worse and worse doesn't figure.

On the other hand the price of oil does have a knock on effect. Roads are made of bitumen, an oil by product iirc, so that is costing more etc.

It's all just a bit fubard tbh.
