Think i'll be getting the boot from work this week. One lad has already been giving the boot but he was still withing his 3 months. I've been there 7/8 months.

Not done nothing wrong, think they are making cut backs.

But seriously, how long was your probation period? Has it expired? Are you entitled to redundancy pay?

Andrew,

I work in Human Resources and can answer your questions but I would advise that you speak to your boss/HR department if you have further concerns.

1. You won't be entitled to redundancy pay because you need to have been with your employer for 2 years before you have that entitlement. If you are sacked because they are making cut-backs, they will need to advise you in writing that they are doing so, but you will be entitled to your notice period (1 week or 1 month) and you will be entitled to payment in lieu of notice if they want you to leave sooner.

2. Probationary period has nothing to do with it. You only begin to accrue rights as an employee when you have been with your employer for 1 year or more. So basically, they can sack you for pretty much any reason within the first 12 months but just make sure they don't screw you over! If you think it sounds dodgy, get some advice.

3. You are entitled to a written contract of employment. If you don't have one, you need to ask for one so that you are aware of your rights and entitlements. Even if you don't have a contract, you still have rights as a worker and therefore you have entered into a verbal contract of employment. Ask for a copy of their staff handbook too in order to find out how they deal with dismissal/redundancy/cut-backs.
