Right to briefly explain the situation....

I have been in talks with someone about buying their car, today i hpi'd it to check and the reg plate (car has a private plate) came back as been the right car etc, but subject to a total loss by insurers.

So I contacted the guy who put the plate on the car in April of this year and obv asked what the hell was going on. He replied sayin he knew nothing about it, but then when he questioned the seller of the plate who he bought it from, he has told me that the previous owner of the plate owned the same car and wrote it off. Thus meaning they write the plate off rather than say the VIN number of the car.

He told me its quite common thing when buying private plates etc due to the reason above.

Anyone heard of anything like this or is he pulling my leg?? He told me i could ring the dvla andf they would cancel the part where it says it has been written off.

On the check i got it records the reg plate that was on the car previous, and below that says...there are no interests recorded against X*** ***

So he put the plate on on the 5/4/08, and the car in question according to the hpi checker was crashed on 5/2/08. But apparently he didnt own it then. Just completely blagged my head, he bought the car from a main dealer garage.

Anyone shed any light on the situation? He seems like a decent enough guy but who isnt when they're selling a car

That doesnt sound right mate, if the car your checking about comes up on that plate then its deffo the car thats been smashed and nothing to do with the plate.

When I used to do insurance checks on cars I used my private plate and my old corsa use to come up.

Thats the only way it will come up if his old car was smashed and recorded with the insurers on his private plate and not the new one

When he bought the car will be the key thing, especially if it was from a BMW main dealer for example.

And the next thing to consider - just how likely is it that the same reg plate is going to be put onto a car that is exactly the same? Including colour and year?!

Unlikely I'd say.

Yeah thats what i mean, the plate the car used to be on was apparently smashed, when he put it on his car it would as he tells me come up saying its been smashed.

He should really ring the dvla i suppose to sort it out if its wrong

apparently they have swapped all his details, jus not wiped out the written off part.

Never heard of it myself jus wondered if anyone else had as apparently the dvla will know for sure

When a HPI is done, it will tell you the year of the car, and the model etc, so like Deano said, its not likely to be on the exact same car/model/colour, think hes trying to have you on.

If the make/model of car your checking comes up on the private plate your using then its deffo the car thats been smashed and nothing to do with the plate

yeah, it was jus the accident happened in Feb, and he put the plate on in April, and on the hpi it had the original plate from the car and it said there are no interests recorded against the original plate.

You can do a check on the car's VIN too, if you go on http://www.mycarcheck.co.uk

That takes the plate out of the question then.

My L4FFN plate comes back as having been a write off as it was when it was on my 1995 Corsa.

Caused me some minor problems when I've been trying to trade it in and it comes back with history, but if you look closer certainly in my case the car I owned was a 2003 and the crash was in 1997, clearly not involving the same car.

Obviously if the date of the accident is after the date of first reg of the car then you're not in quite an obvious situation.

I saw it before on one of my friends cars. When he bought the car, it had a private plate and when he HPI'd it, it stated that hte car had been a total write off, when clearly it hadn't. Further checks showed that it was the car that the plate had previously been on.
