but my local tesco's has got a shit load of cheapish camping gear - ranging from tents to sleeping back - to mini stove's etc etc

Argos do a tent that only costs £10 - it comes up on the till as a 'disposable tent'

Can't remember if it was a halfords or argos advert, but one or the other is doing a giant family tent, 2 double inflatible matresses, and 4 sleeping bags for £100. Seems like a pretty good deal.

Petrol station forecourts if you want camping gaz/calor gas/butane
