You do, but I never take it. You get a year on electrical goods by default anyway. I've had 3 Xboxes and only paid for one.

So a year is a sort of 'industry standard' on most electrical goods?

One year is standard.
Buy anything from John Lewis and they double it to make it 2 years.

Most T.Vs are 5 years, they say it's free but the T.Vs can be a little more expensive anyway.

It's a bit of an old school idea these days it seems.... alot of manufacturers offering decent standard warranty. Do you normally get accidental damage sorted with that? Most theft etc would be covered by home insurance nowadays anyway I reckon...

Although warranties may be up in a year, they still have to be suitable for the job they're designed to do and for a suitable period.

Yeah i remember it being like that, they can give you a year warranty but if youve paid £2k for a tv and it breaks after 13 months they cant just wash their hands of it and say "its out of warranty"
Its a bit of a grey area though trying to define a reasonable period of use
