Manage one person, who is basically at the next level down to me.
We get on really well so find it quite easy, plus she's my age. I'd feel a little awkward if the person in that role was a middle aged man 
Doing appraisals etc is a good thing to be doing. Also looks well when you move on to say that you have managed people, done appraisals, maybe carried out interviews to replace them/increase the team etc

One of the people who is at one of our shops for training before she takes over the running of one we exchanged contracts on today decided that their wasnt any work for her at 2.30pm today so went home 2hrs early
So will let you know how I deal with that tomorrow and report back - will no doubt be a back hander to her face....is that still allowed these days?
