Hi all, my mum is having some difficulty with an insurance claim at the moment, and I wondered if someone could explain to me what a category C write off is?
There is no structural damage to her car, just two doors dented, and I've just spoken to an assessor who is adamant that it's a CAT C.
What does this mean? Besides affecting the cars value, are there any other problems associated with it? ie: Will the car be harder/more expensive to insure because it has been CAT C repaired?

Thanks!

It wont be no more expensive/ harder to insure than a non bumped car, when you start up a new policy the insurers never ask if the car has been written off so it cant make any difference.

it can go back on the road, but needs a VIC check before doing so.
Not sure where you get that done or how much it is.

I'm in the same boat at the moment. My windscreen was smashed and the bonnet and wing were dented/scratched. I was hoping it would be a cat D and i could have it back, but i'm not sure i can be bothered now they've decided it's a cat C.

I think they do it to put you off from getting it back.

The only thing it will affect is re-sale values

I know someone going through the same thing at the moment, spoke to the assessor (who is a good friend) and he says that if theyre repaired through the insurance they are not categorized (i.e B, C, D etc..) they are only classed as cat C, D etc if they are written off by the insurance company and then sold on

This is Direct line insurance

Well following some research, it appears that a CAT C write off is where the vehicle is extensively damaged and requires a Vehicle Identity Check costing £36 to £43.50 at one of VOSA's 56 centres across the country.
The check is to prevent people from taking smashed up vehicles and using them to create new identities for stolen vehicles.

My mums car is a 1989 mercedes 190E, so I cant see why that would ever need a VIC, as if anyone would ever bother ringing a 190E?
Surely its a CAT D as it has only sustained cosmetic damage and someone would have be a f*cking retard to bother stealing a 190E, then crushing a fine example that needs two new doors and fitting its VIN plates to the stolen one, and hoping for £1000 resale value at best!

Category A - A vehicle which should have been totally crushed, including all its spare parts.

Category B - A vehicle from which spare parts may be salvaged, but the bodyshell should have been crushed and the car should never return to the road.

Category C - An extensively damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.

Category D - A damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.

Category F - A vehicle damaged by fire, which the insurer has decided not to repair.

Theft - These vehicles have not been recovered and ownership rests with the insurer who made the total loss payment. They are able to repossess the car as soon as it is identified, even if it has been bought innocently.

If its written off as a Cat C, they will offer her a cash sum for the car, TURN IT DOWN, they will always come back with a higher offer.

Sometimes if its a really old shitter, they will offer a cash sum, and also let you keep the car.

Its not just to stop ringing, its also to check the car has been repaired to a roadworthy standard.

It will simply be a Cat C cause of the age of the car etc, a newer car with exact same damage would be classed as Cat D, it doesnt just go on the damage on the car, goes by age, mileage, condition of rest of car etc.
