Im thinking about buying a set of golf clubs from the U.S on ebay it says they will ship internationaly, has anybody had anything from U.s? Would i have to pay tax on them when they get into the UK and roughly how much should i expect to pay?
ive emailed the seller but its a shop so probably reply tomorrow, but the item ends in 2 hours.
Any help or advice would be great thanks

You pay duty (probably around 10%) on the value of the goods. And then you pay VAT on value of goods + duty + shipping.
If they invoice the goods for a lower value then will save you some cash, but a lot of places wont do so.

Or you can get them to note on the package that it's a gift and avoid paying duty

Not paying import duty and VAT is the same as not paying road tax you know. Lets just wait and see how many people get up on thier high horses about this one though...

I usually get my mates to send me things from america, I still got postage duty on there or something, 40 quid. But they need to take all tags off and make it look like a present or returning your items.

Yeah you can get it sent as a gift, but you try finding a decent company in the US who will risk doing so as the fines if caught (and for a decent sized package its likely they may check)!!

I think gift only works for items up to about £18. Customs aint stupid and will know it's a set of golf clubs or similar by the orginator receipt or weight etc... You still might get away with it as they only check a few items at random on each shipment. I've only had one item to pay duty on in a few years getting stuff from HK, US, Aus etc... I did have to pay £19 extra though

Duty is 8%, VAT is 17.5%. These are taken from an invoice value.
Only way to save money is ask for the invoice to be lowered or get 'free issue' put on the invoice.

I imported my 2 subs and amp from the states, the amp and one speaker got through fine, but i had to pay £35 customs charge on one of the subs. EDIT - they were sent as a gift too, i got them posted to a mate (cos the company doesnt do international shipping) and he resent them on to me.
