its very strange how they come up with the colours.

are you aware that the red smarties are colour from betroot juice?
I know someone that was allergic to betroot and suffered problems when eating smarties.

Used to be made out of beetles IIRC. Might have just been an urban myth though

thats red food colouring, comes from somewhere random like the shell of a beetle, something like that anyway, can't be arsed searching t'interweb to find out.

Cochineal, is a red food colouring derived from crushed beetles.
My mum used to use it for cake icing. It used to come in tiny little bottles. I don't know if it still does.

i remember when i was little i wasn't allowed the blue smarties as they made me go mad because of all the e-numbers! my mum used to pick the blue ones out of the packet before i could get me hands on them
