I have a mate who was a fireman for 6months or so. The training course was excellent from the sounds of it, all be it very hard work, but when it came to the job, there was far too much sitting around waiting and not enough actual work to be done, that it drove him mad.
He was posted at the busiest station in Bucks, but said there was only a fire to go to once or twice a week. The rest of the call outs were AFA's going off willy nilly and needing to be followed up, or reports of smoke sightings from the public, which almost always amounted to nothing.
There was so much waiting around between shouts that he got the hump and quit after re-assessing his options whilst in hospital (non-work related).
Think he was on £26k after the qualification.

Did anyone used to watch Londons Burning a few years ago when it was on tv, i used to like that?
On a serious note tho as good as the job is they are making alot of stations part time now so i guess it would be quite hard to get a full time posting

very hard, took my mate like 3 times and hes fit, healthy, clever etc. Its very rewarding but alot of it nowadays is putting out car fires on council estates, then getting rocks chucked at you by the youth's

its impossible to get in. I tried for about a year and there is never any recruiting going on. I know a fireman and they have it cushty. If you get it into your head that these things happen and your doing your best to change or help the situation youll be reet.

Is it really?
My 2 cousins have got into the fire brigade in the last year along with a guy in my street. It not impossible, You just really really really really really have to show determination.

the training is exactly the same between wholetime and retained. ive been retained for 2 years whilst having another job. its a time constraint some of the time but worth it. the recruitment for retained is ongoing but wholetime recruitment only happens once a year if that, and it all depends on vancancies. i applied 3 times before getting accepted. you just have to perseveire with it

A friend of mine is a Fire Fighter, doesn't do too much though... lots of waiting around.
He did however go to a car crash the other day where the guy who crashed was so drunk and drugged up that after he crashed into a tree and then another car he tried to run away... on two broken ankles
