If in my contract it says I have to give 1 months notice, and I've not worked a month in hand what would happen if I just up'ed and left?
Would they be able to withold the wages that they owe me for the month I'm in now, or would they still have to pay me?

yeah, I know that, but I didn't do any in hand... becasue I moved from self employed to employed, so they just kept on paying me as it was.

hand your notice in, be a cock for a week then they will hopefully just tell you to leave early. that way they have to pay you till the end of your notice period.
think its called gardening leave or sumit.

you would be breaching your contract and they could be very very harsh towards you.
or you can book it off as remaining holiday then resign.
if I'm honest, you're abit of a cunt if you dont work your notice. I know if someone in my team done that it could potentially leave us in a very bad situation.

people at our place rarely get to work their notice period. they get escorted off the premises about an hour after they hand in their notice and get paid in full.

Hand in your notice properly. In my experience some employers will let you skip the notice period or serve less notice than your contract states. But this requires willing on both parts so do it with good grace imo
Upping sticks and leaving won't do much for your CV/References either

IMO not working your notice period is out of order.
The period after handing your notice in will fly by anyway as you know you will be leaving
