V5 or reminder and both insurance and MOT although the latter may be able to be checked for you, not sure.

what happens when you go to buy a car, that doesnt have the v5, but is 100% the owners, and you need to tax it before the replacment arrives

As said, the V5 (or if you have just purchased a car and don't have it, the little new owner slip) or the reminder, and the Insurance Cover Note and MOT certificate.

from dvla

At a Post Office® branch – in person or by post

Use the V11 reminder in person at any Post Office® branch that issues tax discs or by post to the address shown on the reminder form.

Take or send the following:

the completed V11 reminder
insurance certificate or cover note – must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
valid MOT certificate – if the car or motorcycle is over three years old – must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
the payment shown on the reminder (not needed if your vehicle is exempt from paying vehicle tax)
The V11 reminder will be returned to you when the tax disc is issued.

If the owner has an old reminder use the id number off the docs which refers to the serial number on the V5c and then use that to tax the car online. Car will need a valid MOT though to tax it online.

Question for everyone...this is the scenario:

1. Just bought new car (received small new keepers slip - Garage sends V5 off to DVLA)
2. You move house before the new V5 is received at your address...DVLA have sent it to your old address (no chance of going back to pick it up - have no idea who the new tenants are)...

Do I have to pay to obtain a new replacement V5 (its not lost just been sent to my old address) or can I have a replacement sent to my new address? What forms do I need?
