how can you tell?

obviously you can tell by looking at the engine but i mean from year?

I THINK anything before an M plate is an 8v, anything after an M is 16v, M would be the crossover year so difficult to tell.

I had an L plate one and it was an 8v.

Then it became the "sport" in a certain year (1996?) before the facelift.

yep changed at m reg i had a 16v one same specs as a sport engine wise but mine had now power steering and diy windows no sunroof

It's an X14XE, seats are the same as an early sport, or an 8v SRi, the early sport was just a 16v SRi with a different badge really.
