I've seen these pictures a good few times before, but they still amaze me. I can't believe how crisp the images are. They almost look like computer renders.

If you mean is he talking bollocks then no.
It's one reason why they put the Hubble into orbit as the atmosphere cuts out a lot of light to the ground.

I don't buy the atmosphere thing, not at that distance anyway. My guess is that there is sufficient light to use a small aperture so you get a wider depth of field. Plus it's likely to be fairly expensive gear - high resolution sensor etc.
