plenty of good runners around. The are prone to rust but so is any H-reg odd car.
Tel him to go for it, just make sure he looks after it, same engine as the punto gtt great little cars, as mentioned only engine concern is head gasket as wel as the obvious turbo!

A clutch on the way out is a big expense. Maybe £300 just for a cheap recon one form Mr.Clutch. Requires engine out really but they can just about do it without.
Gearboxes can be problematic, jumping out of fifth gear a common issue.
Driveshafts and wheel bearings need checking. If the driveshaft is a bit cream crackered it could indicate it been thrashed round corners (I read somewhere lol).
Rust..sills and behind bumpers although most of the car will be ready and willing to rust. With the bodykit covering alot of the key areas it is difficult to fully see how bad the rust is.
Remote central locking may be broken and therefore have to use the key to open the doors.
Broken subframes on the bottom of the front seats aswell as bolster wear.
Leaking sunroofs.
Slow/knackered electric windows. (There was a joke on the Renault Turbo owners club that different people had competitions to see whose windows were the slowest to go up.
With the age and mileage of them shocks may be well worn out.
Stained/filthy carpets in any car...especially an R5, may show up a hard life!
Rust around windscreens and a missing centre peice in the middle of the windscreen. Nothing majorly expensive but there are so many common bits they seem to be missing it adds up to a good few £££.
If you're worried about mileage, try and get a comprehensive service as the clocks on R5s are useless and can stick for long periods of time or be easily changed.
If its got a boost guage then a high chance of having it turned up. If the original intercooler has a strap round it then the boost is probably turned up. People strap them to stop the top blowing off. if it has a bleed valve fitted be a bit wary because with the high temperatures under the bonnet of R5s, headgaskets prone to failing and a poor cooling system it can easily lead to a meltdown or worse.

Hard to find a "not thrashed within an inch of its life" example too.
Awesome little pocket rockets though

Most sports cars, turbo'd cars, imports (drift) cars have all been thrashed. You know that when you look into buying them.

Exhaust manifold is prone to blowing at head AND turbo, if no one has already mentioned so.
