Both are probably as good as each other...
It's a mentality more than the skill level, to be able to push constantly on the limit and beyond... where the normal person would be lifting off or braking, they can block it and go flat out or leave the braking till the last moment.
Obvioulsy if you put a F1 driver in a rally car or a Rally driver in a F1 car, they won't be instantly as quick as the best in that field...
simply because its a different environment and driving technique and they need to learn it...
but I'm fairly confident both would be as capable as each other....
I also have the stand point that F1 is more about the cars than the drivers...
Like Kubica in a BMW is being beaten by hamilton in the mclaren.
Does that make hamilton better than Kubica? Despite them karting previously and kubica beating hamilton in the past in other formulas of motorsport?
(not saying either are crap, they're all good) - what I'm saying is, they're probably all close to as good as each other at the top level, it's the cars that makes a larger difference.
This is also why I believe if Hamilton's debut season had been in say a Spyker, he'd of not made the headlines like he did.

P.S an example of the above...
Nigel Mansel, F1, Touring Cars, Indy Car etc...
all different, but it's the mentally the raw skill... not the cars that they drive.

impossible to compare, i think if they swapped both drivers would be well out of their depth. aside from the fact they h both have 4 wheels theyre completely different sports

i would say certain moto gp riders, who win at that, and can be quick in a WRC and F1 car
ultimate skill

both are very good and require different skill elements
Alot of the technology etc is carried over in both and the cars are ultimately set-up for individuals
F1 drivers are fitter and have to be more consistent hitting apexs exactly right lap after lap for 200 miles
Rally driver scan get away with getting things slightly wrong
Both good but F1 requires greater concentration and outright skill IMO

It would be weird for both drivers if they swapped cars... as said above they are both used to different techniques & styles and environments!!!
It's too close to call imo

I have to agree with those who say that this isn’t a fair argument as you can’t compare. I agree they are both motorsports and drive the cars in the same manner we all do (steering wheel, pedals, four wheels etc)
But take a look at other sports,
Downhill biking
Trail Motorbiking
MotoGP
Speedway
who has the most skill on two wheels?
What a bout four legs?
Horse racing
Show jumping
What about those who play on the green baize
Snooker
Pool
Billiards
Then those with a racket in their hand
Tennis
Squash
Badminton
Those using their own power
Sprinters
Marathon runner
Who is the fitter athlete?
The disciplines are too different to compare fairly. The argument for WR being these drivers race their cars round corners, over mounds and through gates on all different sorts of surfaces at faster speeds and (potentially) with more control than we (the public) do. While the F1 argument shows that these guts are not only drivers but athletes as well, able to push their car to the best of its capability at speeds, heats, and driving positions we (public) couldn’t cope with. I have to agree that the car plays a big part in a F1 driver success though.
As with these two motor sports, all the different sports I mentioned require different skills, fitness and self discipline even belief. To compare and contrast you can only compare in 1 or two areas (on two wheels, requires riding a horse, running a distance) but contrast in many more

i would go for the rally drivers simply due to fact they wouldnt shit themselves if it starts to slide where as f1 has computer to try stop it sliding hence the rally driver would be able to push harder to try getting it to slide

sliding/drifting is all part of rallying though, get a rally driver not to do it in the wet muddy stages in Wales and Kielder Water....
I understand your arguement in terms of if it goes wrong (ie off track) for rally drivers it can go "more" wrong sliding down a mountain, front on into a tree etc but i cant see why that makes them any more skilled

how do you think the F1 drivers got to drive f1?
they'll have been through many formula's of driving, from karting, single seaters, and other formulas, that will all have had no traction control or anything... They'll know how to slide and control a slide... it's just the quickest way round the track in the F1 car is to not slide it! the car's designed to grip..
Seriously people, it may take like a year of adjustment or so... but I guarentee you that you swap drivers between different motorsport, they'll take time to adjust, but once their used to it and the car is setup around them, they'll be just as competitive as other drivers out there.

Rally, rally cars aren't as easy to drive as a normal car either!
some of the driving is proper extreme!

+lets not forget rally drivers and co-drivers have to be pretty skilled techs too so when things go wrong they can fix them and get back on the stage. Not seen an F1 driver change a lower susp arm on the side of a mountain road

thought they still had traction control but dont follow it tbh as its boring. moto gp is miles better all are highly skilled but sliding at 200mph on a nice clear run off is going to be scarey but 100 + with a tree coming towards you would take the biscuit

hope no traction control this weekend aint it?
MotoGP was ace last weekend... that privateer just dropping it up the inside of rossi!
I was impressed with toesland considering he's on the B team bike, wasn't as quick down the straight etc.

yep traction control is banned for this season as all the teams are using a standard ECU, which is developed by Mclaren. Yes it is this weekend

two different types of cars f1 is more hightech and the pit crew can change most things while the driver is racing as with a rally driver if its not working then tuff shit but as people say its very close
