Ive been browsing google and forums, its got to the point where someone quotes some facts then someone quotes another set that contradicts the first set.

Ive had 2 1.4 8v corsas (94 LS and 94 SRi) and both were fine for my town driving and the occasional spirited drive up a dual-carriageway / motorway i.e. held their own in the overtaking lane easily.

Going to test drive a few new motors at the weekend (looking 03 onwards, so modern ish engines) and with our price range its probably going to be a 1.2/1.4 8v engine in the car. For town driving and the occasional spirited drive home or whatever are we really going to need more than this?

You sure? Im looking on the stoneacre website, and they have all their models listed in the Grande Punto range (car im interested in) and only a few of them mention 16v so I would assume the rest are 8v?

You do get 8v's past 2003.

Clio is one of them off the top of my head.

My friend has a 2005 1.4 8v...

You do get 8v in petrol fiats and french cars.

Also, most newish diesels are 8v (French dCi, 1.9TDi)

thats what i agree to. Vaux didnt do 8v pre 2000, may even be pre 97 following the Corsa facelift and introduction of the EcoTec engines

My 2005 car has 8 valves.

Taking into account how many valves an engine has it possibly one of the worst criteria I have ever came across for choosing a car though.

couldnt agree more John!

16v as said will be better for fuel economy and power (12v = 54 bhp, 1.2 8v 45bhp) choose the car then the engine not the other way round!
