V-Power all the time, iirc the engine is designed to run on the high octane stuff.

Will run on 95 ron but performance and economy is decreased

1.4 sport.

V power - its ok, but not much more noticable on the normal shell fuel

I put £45 quid in of tesco 99 octane fuel in for the first time at the weekend. It dont make it any quicker, but it does make it smoother and quieter on tickover and especially on the motorway. It sempt alot more willing to sit at the high speeds than usual! seems to have gone a little further on the milage side aswell (about 15 more after 220 miles)

I put a tank through of the higher octane now and again just for a clean!

Have used standard grade, 97 and V-Power in mine, didn't ever notice a difference between any of them appart from the price. Have seen rolling road print outs showing proven gains with better quality fuels, but have never noticed the car feeling any different in the 8.5k miles i've had it!

unless you have a Turbo Charged car, or (and) especially Japanese Turbo Imports you should probably use V Power or a similar high octane fuel.

IIRC Japan uses over 100 RON fuel for most of their cars over there, so most imports need to be run on high RON fuel.

The higher octane wont necessarily increase performance, but as already stated, on turbo charged cars it reduces the risk of knock under boost, if you do get knock, its a bad thing and can cause detonation and melted pistons in some cases IIRC.

One thing that might be of interest, is that Dad's E46 used to run like shit on Sainsbury's Super Unleaded - it would 'pink' or judder in some gears.

Started using Shell VPower after being recommended to do so by the 'M3 expert' at Specialist Cars. After a couple of tanks (wasn't worth having it drained, fuel filter changed etc) the car run sweet, and the problems just disappeared
