Tesco in contaminated fuel probe
Supermarket Tesco is investigating claims that diesel fuel bought at its petrol stations in Cambridgeshire may have been contaminated.

Garages in the county have reported up to 30 cases of cars being brought in due to engine problems, BBC Look East has reported.

The garages have said that in most cases fuel has recently been bought from a Tesco garage.

A Tesco spokesman said it was aware of reports and was investigating.

Last year thousands of drivers were hit by concerns over contaminated fuel from a number of supermarket garages.

David Broughton, a trading standards officer with Cambridgeshire County Council, said: "So far today I don't believe there is a problem out there as far as we are concerned.

'Two calls'

"We have had two calls this week from people who said they might have had contaminated fuel after they had filled up from different filling stations.

"Last year we were getting more than 50 complaints a day going back to specific service stations.

"If motorists genuinely think there is a fuel contamination problem we would ask them to contact us with details of where and when they filled up."

In May last year Tesco paid about £8m after more than 17,000 people filed claims when the fuel damaged their vehicles.

Asda sent cheques to about 3,000 customers who collectively claimed £1.4m in compensation.

The contaminated petrol was supplied to forecourts in south-east England and damaged thousands of vehicles.

Some 150 of Tesco's forecourts had their unleaded petrol tanks emptied and refilled following the contamination.

About 30 of Asda's forecourts were affected, while 41 Morrisons forecourts received the contaminated fuel.

tbh, the article is typical of the media problem we have today. It isn't a real news story yet, it's the basic facts, posted on the BBC News website to increase its content blaa blaa media saturation blaa post modernism blaa I'm doing it at Uni.

Will be interesting to see if the problem gets worse though.
