I think it does redress the balance somewhat. This is a bad man with money. Does seem unfair, plus I would question the logic in allowing someone who is a convicted law breaker to even play the lottery. I think that was a mistake in the first place.
I'm actually happy to see a criminal paying for stuff. Not that it actually compensates in this case as it is a particularly horrible thing to live with an no amount of money puts it right. I think it would work better were we talking about theft or something of that nature. Only this week we have a CS user who is fighting to get bits back from his car and will probably never be compensated for it, never mind make money out of it. In my opinion, criminals should pay their own money to fully reimburse any outcome of their crime.
If someone steals my car, I want them to buy me a better car, and deliver it, and pay my phone bill for all the messing. Not claim on insurance I paid for, and lose no claims bonus that I earnt, then end up with a worse car anyway because I got market value and that isn't what I paid for it.
Victims should come out better, that is my metric.

But then again Ian, i agree victims should come out on top and be able to have the last laugh if you will. But it hardly seems fair that someone from an incident that happened a number of years ago, to be able to come back and claim - such as when you come into a sum of money/welfare
Seems unjust being liable for something for the rest of your life.

Well perhaps he should have thought of that beforehand!
Other countries get away with it, I'm sure if you get your hands chopped off that stays with you for a while.
Crime is a factor of deterrent and while there is none, we have a free for all.
Again, tonight we are talking in another thread about a user looking like they've stolen money for car parts they never sent. This guy should be paying us all twice back just for the time in faffing. I've already spent time on it plus phone calls and I didn't even buy any bits.
Hit them in the pocket. If they have no money I'll accept a loan at 30% apr over 10 years just so I know that guy is going to have a shit life forever. And if he feels like stealing again to pay the loan off the interest rate goes up even more.
If he can't afford it, he goes to a properly built jail where he actually can't go out shopping, which has the double bonus that he won't reproduce either.
Hardly difficult, we just need some people with spines in politics to make it happen.
