As a rough guideline..

Needs to handle well with the addition of suspension being permitted
Needs to do the quarter in 15.0 or under as a rough guideline
No older than a 1998 but preferably 2000+

So far ive thought of a MK3 VR6 Highline, Honda Integra Type R, Civic Type R and thats all i can think of, wouldnt mind something jap if there's anything good about for that amount .

Rob.

None of those cars will standard do sub 15 secs quarter mile.

VR6 does low 15's, CTR does about 15.3, Clio sport also won't do sub 15 standard.

he owns a 220bhp cupra

So what?

I know he owns a Cupra but you have to realise insurance groups mean jack.

Clio 172's (particularly cups) and Itegras (especially) are high risk cars hence will be more difficult to insure.

I had an Astra GSi which was grp 16. My 182 is in the same group yet costs 150 more a year to insure.

The cupra in my opinion is a luke warm hatch and quite accessable to a lot of people as its a particularly low risk car. Not saying the insurance is cheap as chips but you will find its other counterparts will cost more to insure.

Is it just the handling thats putting you off the cupra Rob???

If so that can be easily sorted with a good suspension kit an ARBs

clio 172 cup for probably the best buy in terms of age milage etc and one heck of a car on the back roads. my mate had one and it had plenty of grip and handled superb, rated it above his mk1 172 though i didnt feel the interior was very sporty. though it was a discreet car so suprised many people.

probably VERY close in terms on straight line and b road pace to an dc2 itr, which is said to be nicer and a more involving to drive but older and abit harsh on insurance

think i would have the 172 cup if i was after a hot hatch, dc2 itr for ultimate b road coupe thats easy to sell on and maybe a 200sx s14a with a few mods if insurance and fuel bills arent much of a problem

yeh if I was to buy a new car i'd get a 172 cup for about £4k ... it's straight out of the box fairly quick and handles well.

^^^what he said, although I'd get a full fat 172 as cups are a tad hardcore and a bit painful on insurance! Just be wary of the many cat d/c's that are out there

Although i'd budget 5k for a cup at least as 4k gets you a phase1 or a cat d phase 2 cup
