Mine are technically show plates, but using the correct letters, in the correct order, in the right font and legally spaced. Even got the makers postcode on them.

Only thing letting them down is the ISO code thing. If a copper stopped me for missing that he must have far too much time on his hands

A nationwide crackdown on illegal number plates begins today with motorists facing fines of up to £1,000.

This isn't clear but that appears to be a fine of £1000 for an illegal number plate. Just by way of reference -

is that not blatantly showing you know you have illegal plates on if your carrying a legal set in the boot

What's the deal if you dont have a plate at all? I know people who ride bikes without & if they get pulled, they claim it has fallen off & they hadnt noticed, they get a rectification notice & no fine. Would that still apply?

If not, then how about genuine cases where people have their plates stolen etc? I know for a fact my mother wouldn't notice if hers had gone... would she face a hefty fine under the new clampdown?

If she is otherwise law abiding then probably, yes.

If she's a common criminal then no, she'll probably never get caught.

I'd rather see more of a crackdown on uninsured drives than on numberplates being slightly small/wrong font

To put that into context, if someone smashed their insured, mis-spaced, small numberplate into the back of my car at 30mph i'd get it sorted a lot easier than some if it were a normal numberplate & the driver wasn't insured

but they cant make money from you if you have a wrongly spaced/illegally sized plate when you go through speed cameras etc. thats what it will be all about
