Can anyone tell me the facts about insurance for learner drivers?
I want to get my first car before I pass the test and get more practise in that. What happens about insurance though? Will I have to take out my own policy? or do I get my dad/brother to take out a policy and I'm a named driver?

You can be on your own insurance or be a named driver with a provisional.
It usually works out a couple of quid more expensive that insurance with a full licence. I never went out wit ha parent because you seem to pick up bad habits IMO.

quotes are more for a full lisence becuase...
- a learner driver will have L plates on the car and have to be with someone over 21 with a driving lisence at all time.
with a full UK you can do whatever you want.

Is there any good companies for learner drivers?
Also, you are all saying its more on a full licence, but for me its the other way around

My insurance was the same before as after I passed, not a penny more and not a penny less. And I was allowed the full 12,000 miles.
Direct Line were the cheapest for me by miles.

id suggest getting your own insurance, just purely to build up your NCB etc...
I went with a broker who gotmy policy with Fortis, as i had Provisional when i insured mine
Broker: Geoffrey simmons http://www.thegsigroup.co.uk/products.asp?prodid=1#1

oh and no it didnt go up or cheaper for me when i passed my test , but it was 8 months into the policy. Best thing to do is write down list of questions before you call them.

Just rung Direct Line, they won't quote me on a 1.4 Sport, but its £1905 for a 1.4 GLS, £1711 with online discount!
soo maybe not then, Unless my dad or brother will go down as main driver with me as a named driver, but they both have cinvictions

With Direct Line, you'll still earn NCB as a named driver.
edit: As long as you stick with Direct Line when you become the policy holder.

Indeed. Doesn't bother me, they've been consistently the cheapest for the last 4 years anyway.
