the clay bar removes all the tar and shit normal washing doesnt remove. if you dont remove it, all you're doing it polishing on top of that layer of crap which is neither polishing the paint, and worse, scrubbing it off and swirling it around your paint.

my mum has a 57 plate bmw, i clayed half the door, it was like a fuckin brick it was that rough, she was shocked at how much shit was on it, done less than 5k.

good thing is once you're done you can use the quick detailer for touch ups between washes, usually plenty left.
