selling me car when i get me claim, so i will have around 5 grand to spend on a new car, these are the four that i was thinking about. When i buy a new car il be 20 nearly 3 years no claims and 3 points, so iv picked these because there quickish cars and the insurance wont be a killer.

so if anyone could tell me about them, and which they would choose, would be handy, thanks alot rob

depends what you want from them, the mk 4 tdi 150 is a great car, having owned a GT TDi 150 and a Saxo VTS my opinion is, the golf handled very poor, the mk 4 is an awful chassis and is well known for its poor handling in standard guise. The VTS/106 GTi is awesome by comparison.

Straight line performance from a standing start would be close, but once rolling the golf was very good and pretty quick despite its lardy weight, used to see 55mpg on the trip computer which was a bonus where as the VTS was around 25 -35mpg. Interior the golf was an easy winner, full leather, heated seats, air con was a nice place to be. The VTS had poor seats and as you would expect a very cheap and basic interior.

As for the other cars I would say the 1.8 astra is not in the same league as the above. Starlet turbo, never driven but have heard great things about them.

Forgot to add the GTi TDi 150 had 6 gears, not sure about the 110 and 115 models though, and the 150 has quite a few different engine components compared to the other GT TDis,

From the factory the 150PD had the following extras over the 130PD:

* 16" Montreal II alloys (against the 130PD's 15" Avus II alloys)

* V6 front splitter

* Sports suspension (lowered / stiffer)

* Lumbar support on the front sports seats

* 3 headrests in the rear

* Climate control as standard from 2002 onwards (the 150PD was only introduced in 2001 so this covers the majority of them)

* Engine should be badged TDI

Of course any of the above could have been fitted to a 130PD (or a 115PD) either when new or afterwards, so the best way to be sure is to check under the bonnet: the intercooler is front-mounted in a 150PD - both the 115PD and 130PD have side-mounted intercoolers. Also on the underside of the carpet in the boot is a data sticker; the power output on that should be listed as 110KW (150bhp).

You're probably best ignoring the rear badging as the dealers fitted either GTI, GTI or TDI and people often change them afterwards anyway. By contrast, all 115PD and 130PD models are badged GT TDI or simply TDI from 2001 onwards, but again many people change these badges themselves.

A 150PD is basically 1.8T GTI-spec, a diesel GTI if you like. The 130PD and 115PD are both GT-spec (biggest visual differences are the wheels and suspension). Note: all PD-engined Golfs (115, 130 and 150) had 6-speed boxes.

Bit of info on the 150 and 130 engines
