I'm not sure why i keep doing stuff to my car I'm never gonna see this money again as if i sell the car it'll give me nothing back.

But now I've got the quaife diff, I'm tempted to Throttle body my car, get standalone management, high comp pistons and wilder cams - may be able to sell my old cams + ecu together to get some money back.

Guy on Saxosportsclub just chucked this little lot on his car and ran it on the rolling road after being mapped...

and made 192 bhp @ 7700 rpm (with a pretty restrictive manifold and exhaust )

If I stripped my car it'd be around 220 bhp per tonne

Only down side is i reckon it'd at least cost £2000 probably not including labour or mapping - and say i got about £400 for my cams + ecu sold, i'd still be looking at £2000 or more all in

Am I mad?

I'm wanting it for track use mainly not 1/4 mile, so nos isn't really practical for track days as it'd run out too quick.

Good point I can afford it, but CAN I afford it really

I was supposed to be going travelling this year... hmm actually fuck it, I shouldn't think silly like this, I'll just regret it as I'll be wanting to sell it again next week

fair play, throttle bodies a much better option

Daily driver? Get a cold start system on that ECU or it will piss you off in winter

You can get over 200 bhp on carbs, either bike or webers and run a dizzy or get mappable ignition should work out at least £500 cheaper (200 bhp will not be enough power after a while )

do it if ou arent going to do a lot of miles on the road...

The TB bark will wear thin with road miles, the engine will need rebuilds more regularly than OE....
Will the drivetrain and car cope with the power increase without changes?

If its a pure track car, do it...
If its a road car most of the time, dont
If you can olny afford the parts, but not eventualities, dont do it

I agree with Adam, don't do it if you can't afford to fix it.

I'd go for the pointy cams and the management (I wouldn't go for OMEX though) and you'll have 175-180bhp and it will still start in the winter, and won't piss you off as much on long journies.

If you don't do more than about 5k a year, go for it.

do it then put a big valve head on an break 200+bhp can do throttle bodies and management for 2500 supplied fitted and mapped.

want it as an every day road car, personally I wouldnt go with the big cams.

if its a weekend car and you have something else to use then go for it, as Broster says get a decent head.

If it is an evcery day car, tb's and management with mildish cams and standard bottom end will be fine. I find its the cams which affect the every day aspect.

Thing is, I barely drive my car at the mo... basically goes to and from home and uni (about 30 miles) occasionally, and sits on the drive of my student house most of the time...

Then when i graduate in a few months I plan to get a Tdi daily driver anyway. Just maybe i should wait till I've graduated and got a proper job before I start spending silly money

nikkijamie - I've not heard of anyone with a 106 gti / vts make 200 bhp on carbs infact I'd picture it losing them power to be honest.

Basically the spec i posted above is fairly 'poverty' spec / livable.

I wouldn't need solid lifters to run 734's and they still give a nice mid range.

Couple of my mates have been whacking solid lifters and and going seriously high spec cams like 809's - 810's ... Still awaiting to hear half of their results

one person with 809's got 208 bhp the other day tho

if you have throttle bodies set up properly and a mnagement system mapped properly you wont find any difference with how it drives over standard, iv driven many throttle body cars now and granted some are pigs but map them properl y and they drive like a new car. something like a 280deg cam profile will be about max without loosing too much low down power

contradicted yourself there if your talking about elise? they're lightweight but lack power (well the cheap ones). early ones are only 120 bhp, and similar weight to the gti. I know where your coming from though.

How do students afford all those bits unless they sell coke to all the other students?

I worked last year on my placement year and pretty much stuffed it all in the bank. Plus student loan Plus working all holidays
